Vehicles and safety

The project Vehicles and safety started 1st May 2001 and terminated 31st October 2007.  Participating companies:

  • Elkem Aluminium
  • Hydro Aluminium
  • Alcan á Íslandi
  • Kubikenborg Aluminium
  • Sør-Norge Aluminium
  • Vigeland Metal Refinery

Background
The project was carried out during a 2½-year period with good results. During that period a cost reduction of 22 % was achieved.  It was continuously a great potensial for further reduction.  The project was agreed to go on.

Objective
Improvement of the driving skills.

Aim
Yearly cost reduction for the driving incidents with 25 %.

Project activities and results

Benchmarking
A report was published every month with numbers of incidents and costs.  The registration started in November 2001. A cost reduction of 16 % was gained from 2002 to 2003. Number of incidents increased during the same period.  Increased focus on vehicle incidents during the project period has increased the report frequency at the plants.  Yearly cost trend - see graph.

Driving competitions
The AMS championship was carried out each year in May/June with participants from Iceland, Sweden and Norway.  The drivers qualified through local competitions
The fifth and last Nordic championship was arranged at Husnes, Norway, 29th May - 1st June 2007.  From 2006 the competition consisted of three categories. Vehicles in category I is drain truck, category II skimmer and category III pickup.  In addition all the participants competed on fork lift truck and they had to accomplish a theoretical test.
1st prize in the championship wass a big cup and NOK 5 000, 2nd prize NOK 3 000 and 3rd prize NOK 1 000.  The participants were very competent and showed great precision in the driving.  The championship gave the drivers inspiration to think safety when they managed the vehicles. The competition in the championship was tremendous.

Checklists
A pilot project has been carried out with checklists.  The checklist was drawn up for the use of each individual operator by controlling the vehicle before use. The checklists were handed in to the HES co-ordinator after every shift.  The HES co-ordinator co-operated with the engineering workshop to repair the defects.  The checklist was used actively in audit of the vehicle.  In order to increase the efficiency of the work with the checklists it is recommended to make them electronically.  They can then be used as work orders for the engineering workshop.

Audit
In order to qualify the result of the use of checklists an audit was put through at all the plants.  The members of the central project group carried out the audit. The audit report showed an improvement according to the results from the checklists sent in from the pilot regions. In addition did the audit reveal three regions as common at all the plants:

  • Body damage
  • Defect lights
  • Dirty windows

In the light of this mini audits were carried out focusing on these three regions at each plant. The plants executed this audit themselves.

Yearly audits will be carried out to verify that the positive development continues when it comes to standard of the vehicles at the member plants. In the audit the checklists should be used.  After end of project in October 2007 audits are continued from 2008 through the project  Traffic behaviour.

Video
To support the use of checklists and to show the necessity an information and motivation video film is produced.   It shows check out of an aeroplane (Dash 8) where the pilots execute their controls as a truck driver controls the vehicle. The video is used in safety and shift meetings.

Content:

  • Use of checklist
  • Driving with open door
  • Correcting the driver for unsafe driving
  • Filling of oxide
  • Driving in the pot room
  • High speed
  • Driving into walls and pillars
  • Lofty forks
  • Skimming
  • Repair shop
  • Pictures from the driving competition

Wipe cloths
In the light of the mini audits where many dirty windows/headlights were revealed and as a result poor sight, 1000 wipe cloths were ordered which the plants were given to use in the vehicles.  In production halls with dust/impurities it is difficult to keep the windows clean. It is in this connection important that the departments work out daily cleaning routines.  The wipe cloths were a factor in such an activity.
